It’s that time of year when economic developers ensure Site Selection Magazine has a complete tally of the economic development wins from all 50 states. In Site Selection’s 2023 Governor’s Cup ranking, Ohio ranked No. 3 out of 50 states for overall economic development project wins and No. 5 for investment projects per capita. Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton, Defiance, Findlay, Greenville, Lima, Sydney, and Wooster were all in the top 10 for projects in their categories and Ohio had more metro and micropolitans in the top 100 than any other state.
In 2023, Ohio drew in substantial business ventures, such as corporate headquarters, manufacturing facilities, research and development hubs, and logistics sites, with prominent names like Joby Aviation, Amazon, Wells Fargo, and Google leading the way. The latest Governor’s Cup standings highlight Ohio’s ability to empower corporations, entrepreneurs, and talented individuals to establish and advance their businesses and careers in the state.
Site Selection recently announced that Ohio is No. 1 in their Global Groundwork Index, for a second straight year. This ranking is based partly on the data gathered for the Governor’s Cup since 2019 and is a testament to the hard work done in communities across the state to prepare for and win public and private investments.
Despite the economic slowdown across the U.S., Ohio continues to see strong interest from companies who want to access the low cost of doing business and skilled workforce. We’ve continued to build site opportunities and talent programs so Ohio is ready when companies are ready.
Now is the time to celebrate this year’s success and Ohio’s viability by submitting the economic development projects you’ve won to the Governor’s Cup submission portal. The deadline for 2024 submissions is November 26, 2024.
WHY SUBMIT?
Critical economic development work happens at the local level. Governor’s Cup results are based on what you do! When you submit data to the Governor’s Cup, it helps both your community and Ohio overall. Here’s how:
- First, positive rankings help attract investment opportunities to Ohio and the metropolitan and micropolitan areas that place high on the list.
- Second, JobsOhio works with its network partners and the Ohio Department of Development to analyze details of projects won outside of those that JobsOhio assists. This data is crucial to refining our strategies and resources to grow Ohio as a desirable location for economic development.
WHICH PROJECTS ARE CONSIDERED?
Headquarters, manufacturing, distribution and warehousing, office, data centers, call centers, and R&D projects are eligible for submission.
Projects that meet one or more of the following criteria will be considered:
- Employee growth: 20 or more new jobs created
- Square footage: 20,000 or more of new or expanded facility space
- Capital investment: $1 million or more for construction, land, or building
A project is more likely to be accepted when the local economic development organization supplies more than one of the qualifying data criteria above to the Governor’s Cup submission portal.
DEADLINE
The deadline for 2024 submissions is November 26, 2024. All projects received after November 26, 2024, will be reviewed as possible 2025 submissions.
