The City of Shaker Heights, one of Northeast Ohio’s most historic and progressive communities, has an opening for a Planner in the Planning Department. Shaker Heights, among the nation’s first planned cities, continues to plan strategically for its future. This is an exciting opportunity for an energetic planning professional to become an integral part of a five-person team, one that has already implemented the plan for the $100M transit-oriented Van Aken District and is involved in subsequent phases of development now underway.

Join a dynamic team of professional planners producing exceptional plans and implementing exciting projects, including the future phases of Van Aken District redevelopment, active transportation and streetscape projects, public art and transit-oriented development. This position is ideal for a planner interested in a variety of topics contributing to exceptional community planning.

Assignments include active transportation, recreation and neighborhood plans; grant research, grant applications and grant administration; staff assistance to the Landmark Commission for regular meetings and special projects; graphics and mapping; general research related to current planning initiatives; and support for other Planning Department activities.

Applicants should possess thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of planning, urban design and historic preservation.

The minimum qualifications include any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in planning, architecture or a related field; excellent writing, communication and computer skills; and 2 years professional experience in urban planning, historic preservation or community development activities or equivalent combination of education experience. Self-starter with grant writing experience preferred.
