A research and arts project to document how eastern Ohio has been shaped by changes in the coal industry was awarded a $35,000 grant from the Sustainability Institute at Ohio State. The Ohio Coal Transition: Pathways for Community Resilience is a partnership between The Ohio State University’s School of Environment and Natural Resources, OSU Extension, University Libraries, and the departments of Theatre, Geography and Civil, Environmental, and Geodetic Engineering.

Since 2014, TSEP has more than tripled the number of development initiatives (135) and active volunteers (140); and it has more than doubled its public contracts, private financial support, and members. The organization has grown to encompass five external facing leaders, each responsible for one or more development area, and it is currently operating with no dedicated administrative support. The membership and board have determined that keeping both the quantity and quality of activities pursued by the organization is a priority, and to maintain the pace and volume of work sustainably, TSEP needs to add a talented Operations Manager to manage internal operations and support the team and their many important activities, projects, initiatives, and committees.

The RISE Ohio (Resilience Initiative for Southeastern and Eastern Ohio) is a U.S. EDA Assistance to Coal Communities program initiative led by Ohio University’s Voinovich School, BHRC, and OMEGA focused on economic diversification; Opportunity Zone planning, development, and investment; and assistance to communities impacted by coal fired power plant closures.
Buckeye Hills Regional Council (BHRC) is a council of governments established in 1968 and serves the counties of Athens, Hocking, Meigs, Monroe, Morgan, Noble, Perry and Washington in rural Appalachian Ohio. Buckeye Hills administers funding from multiple State and Federal sources in the areas of community and economic development, transportation planning and aging services in order to address the needs of member communities.

When Cy Wood moved from New York City to teach high-school students, “I moved to Hamilton, Ohio, basically sight unseen,” he said with a laugh. “I knew 100-percent, zero people when I moved here.”
Wood, 39, teaches vocal music and theater at Butler Tech School of the Arts. He moved into a Hamilton apartment because it was close to the school. Yet noticing some empty downtown buildings at the time, he thought when he got more established he might move to a bigger city, like Cincinnati.
“As soon as I moved here, I started meeting people,” he said. “And living downtown, I got to know so many people, and there’s such a great community.”
